The oceans cover 71% of our planet, and more than three and a half billion people depend on them for survival, yet 80% of the water has not been mapped, explored, or even seen by human beings. The ocean is terrifying in its magnitude and unseen depths where beings of titanic proportions stir, but also magnetic in its secrecy and romance with its shifting colors and pure life. It is also highly lucrative, carrying the promise of many rewards if we just brave the waves and great blue. If we wish to reap the ocean’s rewards, we need to be able to navigate the waters. Luckily, marine technologies and maritime solutions have evolved rapidly over the last few decades, so let’s take a look at some of them.

Data Analytics 

Data analytics and AI solutions probably are not images one immediately conjures when thinking of cresting wave after wave, but they have proven just as helpful on the sea as they have on land in something as banal as an accounting firm or something of the sort. Both are often tools to further refine and modify other systems, like maritime tracking, which keeps you right on track and on schedule using technologies like GPS, satellite communication, radar, and data analytics. The ocean is, well, huge, and if you get off course by even a few degrees, you may end up in America instead of India, which you don’t want unless you are Christopher Columbus. Your decision-making capabilities and crucial insights will only be enhanced by receiving and reading the right data.

AI Solutions

You have space in the ocean and do not have to worry about crashing into other ships at high speeds. Routes are usually never carved into granite, meaning you have a lot of flexibility and breathing room when it comes to how you reach your destination. AI can help optimize your route by factoring in things like fuel consumption, weather conditions, and maritime traffic patterns, finding the safest and most efficient passages and paths for vessels. This is not only safer and more efficient, helping to lower fuel costs, but also minimizes the environmental impact as much as possible, helping to make a more sustainable marine industry.

Ships are no longer just wood hammered together with a wheel on top; they are highly advanced mechanical titans traversing the ocean, and just like practically everything else in the modern world, many of their systems have been digitalized, too. The ocean and ships probably do not sound like the natural habitat of a robot, but nowadays, that could not be further from the truth. Innumerable maritime operations and tasks have been transformed by robotics, automating tasks that were once only in human hands and required harsh labor while also being prone to something as simple and yet damaging as human error. Drones are just one example; they can buzz around a ship's hull and inspect it, helping to identify potential issues before they can turn into actual problems. Deep-sea exploration and monitoring? No issue at all; underwater robots or remotely operated vehicles have proven vital in this field, doing the dangerous work and minimizing the danger faced by human divers while providing all the valuable data necessary to get the job done.

VR In Training And Maintenance

Working on a ship is no walk in the park, and at times, it can be genuinely dangerous, with a very real risk of losing life or limb. Crew members need efficient, thorough training before they can set foot on a ship, and immersive reality technologies are an exciting development in maritime solutions that have proven highly beneficial for these purposes. Virtual reality technologies are a safe and cost-effective training environment for prospective crew members to practice things like ship navigation or handling. The more connected digital systems become, the more vulnerable they become to cyberattacks and hackers. This is a serious problem, especially with something as huge and complex as a ship that features so many interconnected systems that affect and control navigation, cargo, crew schedules, communications, and so on. Cybersecurity is a top priority, necessary to protect vital infrastructure, prevent disruptions, and ensure the safety of the vessel, its crew, and its cargo. Luckily, maritime cybersecurity has stepped up too, and there is a wide range of advanced services, tools, and solutions to choose from, depending on your specific operational needs and risks. Before a ship ever leaves shore, it needs to have battened down the hatches, so to speak, and minimized the risks of digital intruders.

 

The maritime industry is one of the oldest on the planet. Long before we ever even thought of cars or planes or anything more advanced than a cart with a horse, we had ships traversing the vast oceans with men on board braving waves, hunger, storms, and creatures we do not even know of. However, the industry has evolved to meet modern standards, systems and ideas, and navigation and convenience and safety have never been more thorough than they are now.
